University of Forestry and Environmental Science

(Yezin, Myanmar)

The UniversityFounded in 1923 as the Forestry Department of Yangon University, in 1992, the University of Forestry and Environmental Science became a separate entity based in Yezin, Nay Pyi Taw. It is the only higher education institution in Myanmar majoring in Forestry Science.

The University has 120 academic and administrative staff and offers a 5-year BSc course in Forestry; postgraduate courses include a master degree and a diploma.

Currently, there are about 480 undergraduates and 25 graduates (men and women). International collaboration includes staff training with the German Academic Exchange programme (DAAD); research cooperation with Kyoto University, (Japan); postgraduate scholarships with Ritsumeikan University (Japan) and engagement in regional networks such as the Mekong Wetland network and Himalayan Universities Consortium.

Most alumni are employed as forestry experts in government institutions, including the Forest Department, ECD (Environmental Conservation Department), MTE (Myanmar Timber Enterprise), and DZGD (Dry Zone Greening Department). Others find employment in non-governmental conservation organizations such as the FREDA and WCS.

The University's mission is to provide the students with academic principles and application methods in forest science, and to nurture competent forestry professional. Its vision is to be a student-oriented and forward-looking educational institution.

 

The University aims at disseminating forestry knowledge through teaching and training, and increasing scientific knowledge of forestry through research and development.
